MUSIC INSTALLATION: POWER TONE, DRUMS & SERPENT, 2007, Private Collection
Finally, the musical instruments depict the fact that literacy has oral roots. This refers to the protesting power of art in general. Kader Asmal and Wilmot James (2001:185), are of the opinion that the “…consequence of a negotiated change is that reforms must proceed with inherited assets and liabilities”
Consequently, the South African society inherited an unbalanced educational system where the quality of education is determined by the amount of money parents are willing to invest in the education of their children, leaving the majority of the rural community under resourced, badly educated and mostly illiterate. In the words of Kader Asmal and Wilmot James (2001:185), “The democratic government inherited the black school not as a place of learning, but as a place of struggle and resistance.”
Just as a trumpet heralds the entry of somebody or something of great importance, education, with art as an important component of expression will enter rightfully and regain its proper place in society.
