ILLUMINATION II 2009, multi-media light installation,
Fortezza da Basso, Florence, Italy (The work is now permanently installed at the National Library, South Africa)
According to Betty Edwards (1986:41), Illumination can be regarded as the most crucial phase of the creative process, and refers to the moment of inspiration. She also states that illumination can be defined as: “…throwing light on a subject in order to see it better (Edwards 1986:39)”.
The third installation emphasizes the fact that communication is an essential part of the learning process. Without insight, no meaning can be drawn from the text. For example, the subtle use of a picture alphabet created by children replaces the cut-out text. By creating a new picture alphabet, the difficulty in understanding the meaning of literary text with no meaning to a specific culture group are made evident. The work also refers to the illuminating effect of literature in general and the contemplative nature of knowledge and insight.
